Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges provide realistic replacements for lost or damaged teeth. These restorative options offer useful alternatives to dentures and implants to preserve your teeth and maintain dental health.

Crown

A crown is a tooth-like cap that covers a broken, irregular, or decayed tooth to restore function and appearance. Crowns are made out of ceramic, metal, or ceramic over metal.

Bridge

A bridge consists of one or more replacement teeth held in place by crowns on both sides. The bridge and crowns are made to match the surrounding gums and teeth for a natural look.

When would I need a crown or bridge?

Your options for tooth restoration include dentures, implants, crowns, and bridges. If a tooth is damaged but salvageable, Dr. Kulaly usually recommends a crown.

When the tooth is missing or beyond repair, Dr. Kulaly may suggest another restorative method, such as dentures, implants, or bridges. Dentures are a good option when all or entire sections of your teeth are missing.

Implants and bridges are great when just one or a few teeth are missing. Bridges are less costly and take less time to put in place than implants, but they may require future maintenance, unlike permanent implants. You can discuss your options with Dr. Kulaly to decide which approach might be best for you.

What happens during crown and bridge procedures?

Dr. Kulaly makes every effort to ensure you’re comfortable and know what to expect to put you at ease before the procedure. Sedation dentistry is always an option.

Before placing a bridge or crown, Dr. Kulaly recommends teeth whitening, so your replacement teeth are matched to your most brilliant color. She then takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to a dental lab where your new teeth are designed. She provides a temporary fixture to wear until your permanent one is ready.

When your fixtures are ready, Dr. Kulaly prepares your teeth for crowns by removing some of the enamel. If you only need a crown, she fixes the crown to the tooth with a permanent bond. If you get a bridge, she affixes the bridge with permanent crowns on both sides.

Afterward, your smile and eating ability should go back to normal. If you need to replace lost or damaged teeth, contact Pavilion Dental over the phone to discuss your options.
